In honor of Black History Month, we journey to a spiritual- and one you've heard before. Whether through Disney's The Lion King, The Big Bang Theory, or The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, this song of despair has reverberated throughout American History and the lens of popular culture. Originating during the time of slavery, and later arranged by notable Black composers like Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Henry Thacker Burleigh, the lyrics and melody tell the story of anguish and an undiminished flame of hope. For change, for equality, and for justice.
